If you haven’t seen the trailer for the new school rendition of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air watch it now.
What if the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air took place in 2019? What if West Philadelphia, born and raised, was set in the present day? Will, Uncle Phil, Jazz, Carlton, how would they all be portrayed in today’s time?
Before I go any further, for anyone not in the know, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a 90’s sitcom starring rapper-turned-actor Will Smith. The show, executive produced by Quincy Jones, ran on NBC from 1990-1996, and was a huge success, ultimately, catapulting Will Smith’s career into superstardom.
A Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remake has been rumored for years now, but nothing has even been visualized. That is, until now:
Filmmaker Morgan Cooper took it upon himself to film a modern-day ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ trailer and the result was a seemingly cinematic blockbuster ready-made for the big screen.
“I felt like growing up I always thought there was more to the story, more behind the sitcom format,” Cooper said to Okayplayer. “I thought, ‘Wow, we could take this story and really ground it in reality in a really dramatic way.’”
Cooper’s modern rendition of The Fresh Prince was brilliant, going viral with over 3 million views in under two weeks. The trailer, featuring Jerry Madison as Will Smith, dramatizes the Fresh Prince story in a way both Fresh Prince fans and present-day movie critics would be open to.
The three-minute trailer is merely a fictional concept, but with the right people behind it, Cooper’s trailer could be a real contender for a full production rollout. Maybe this will inspire Will Smith or Quincy Jones to back Cooper’s idea as a feature film.
“When we first made this thing I was really confident in the art. The internet’s the internet. You never know if something’s gonna catch a spark or not,” Cooper continued during his Okayplayer interview. “I’m very excited for everything that has happened and receive it humbly. But at the end of the day I’m a black creative and representing my culture and expressing myself authentically is of the utmost importance to me.”
Only time will tell what comes next. As for now, Fresh Prince fans can only enjoy Cooper’s art for what it is and fantasize about what may
