Attention Women of color everywhere, we just just got a brand new hero. In the era of Donald Trump’s twitter fingers, it’s about time we sprinkled some millennial girl power in the mix.
One June 26th, 2018 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley (the assumed successor to Nancy Pelosi) in the Democratic primary for Congress. With over 57 percent of the votes, this win is one for the history books.
Alexandria did not come to play with these foes.
Not only is she the first woman of Latin descent to represent her district in Congress, at 28 years old she is considered a baby in the world of politics.
It’s Weds night and you know what that means: fundraising calltime.

An unlikely candidate, Ocasio-Cortez was working as a bartender and waiting tables when she began her powerful grassroots movement campaign just two years ago. Many are wondering just how she did it and how her unconventional win might be duplicated. Well, we looked at Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s groundbreaking journey and gathered
Three Surefire Tips to Upset the Establishment for the Win!
1. Utilize Non-traditional Resources: The days of having to “do things by the books” are long gone. Now is the time to think outside of the box and use your creativity to forge new paths. Have an unorthodox approach in mind? Follow your gut! Don’t be afraid to blaze uncharted territories. After all, you’re in your position to open the doors for others to follow in your shoes.
2. Don’t Despise Small Beginnings: Just a short time ago, Ocasio-Cortez was working as a campaign organizer for the Bernie Sanders campaign.
Looking back, she says she never expected to run for office herself. However, as life would have it – her “small” role there actually gave her the tools and resources she then used to execute her own successful campaign.
3. “They” Aren’t Going to Hold the Door Open for You: By “they” we mean – the establishment. You’ve got to be prepared to kick down “locked” door.
Ocasio-Cortez’s win is currently being called an “upset” due to the fact that she’s defying norms and making “the establishment” quite uncomfortable. However, when you keep pushing re-define narratives and shatter glass ceilings, the establishment will have no choice but to yield.
Times are changing right before our eyes. The limits are being stretched, and the world is watching. Given the current political climate, the only way to move the needle toward positive change is by challenging the system. In the words of Ocasio-Cortez,
“The only way you beat a machine is with a movement.”
We will continue to cheer Ocasio-Cortez on as she blazes a new path of justice, equality, and freedom for ALL!
